Downhole Motors
Compared to conventional rotary drilling operations, the use of a downhole motor (also known as mud motor or drilling motor) allows a higher drilling performance. In addition, the drill string rotation can be lowered, whereby the wear on drill string and casing is reduced. In combination with a MWD system (Measurement While Drilling) numerous directional drilling applications are possible.
Downhole motors basically consist of a helical rotor and a rubber coated stator housing. When the drill mud flows through the motor, the cavities between the stator and rotor are filled. The rotor then performs an eccentric rotational motion that is forwarded to the drill bit as drive power.
Downhole motor assembly:
- Top Sub
Downhole motor and drill string are connected by a sub. - Catch Sub Assembly
This component secures the internal and external components of the drill motor in an event of damage of the housing. This safety feature allows problem-free recovery of all components at any time. - Power Section
The central element of the drilling motor consists of a rubber coated stator and a hard chrome plated rotor. In the standard version, the complete stator contour is made of special rubber. For high performance applications, equidistant stators are used. By milling the inner contour out of the stator, the layer thickness of the rubber material can be minimized, which increases the pressure drop in the downhole motor. - Flexible Drive Shaft
The eccentric rotational motion of the rotor is transmitted to the bearing unit via a flexible drive shaft. This component is critical to allow the typical bend in the housing of the downhole motor. - Adjustable Bend Housing
The bending angle of the downhole motor can be set directly at the well site. This feature makes flexible adaptation to different project requirements possible. - Bearing Assembly
The bearing unit receives the high load stresses during the drilling operation. Optional external T2A stabilizer ribs are available to ensure an optimal stabilization in the borehole.
Blow-out Preventer
Blow-out Preventer are an important safety element in the drilling industry. These systems allow the closing of the open borehole even if it is under high pressure. Through individual configuration options we can customize our preventer stacks for your drilling project. Because of in-house production of all components, we are able to respond fast to meet special requirements. In addition, we offer a wide range of maintenance and repair services.
Preventer assembly:
- Standpipe
The base of each preventer stack is a securely cemented standpipe. For small borehole diameters the usage of a packer standpipe is possible. - Gate Valve
With a gate valve the borehole can be sealed off when no drill string is installed. - T-fitting
This device can be used to pump-in or out drill mud or injection material. Additionally, a manometer can be installed to monitor the borehole pressure. - Ram-type Preventer
A ram-type preventer closes the annular space between the borehole and drill string. In normal operation, rams with rubber inserts are used. Optional blind jaws enable a full sealing of the borehole when no drill string is installed. A full sealing of the borehole with installed drill string is possible in combination with a kelly valve. - Shear Preventer
A hydraulic shear preventer can cut through the drill string with sharpened shear rams and thus makes a total sealing of the borehole possible even when a drill string is installed. - Rotational Preventer
With a rotation preventer, the annular space to the drill string is sealed even during ongoing drill string rotation. A rotating sealing compensates the motion of the drill string and ensures high endurance. - Kelly Valve
A kelly valve can close the drill mud circulation completely. In combination with a closed ram-type preventer total sealing of the borehole is also possible with installed drill string. - Swivel
The inner part of the swivel is rotationally mounted and allows the drilling fluid totransit from the fixed hose connection at the swivel housing to the rotating drill string.
Kelly Valves
This safety valve is installed to cut off the drill fluid flow in the drill string in case of any risky event. In combination with a closed ram-type preventer a total sealing of the borehole is possible, even when the drill string is installed. The kelly valve is installed into the drill string at the surface and can be closed easily with a hand gear.
Our kelly valves are designed according to the standards of API and resist pressures up to 15,000 PSI (1,000 bar). We offer all common connecting threads like REG, NC, IF and FH. In addition, most mining industry thread connections are available.
